Ear of Dionysius
The whole band to the east compared to the theater is characterized by a series of latomie (stone quarries): The Latomia of Paradise, with the ear of Dionisio, a "S-shaped cave", which owes its name to the Caravaggio, and which it is famous for the particular acoustic effect. It follows the Rope Makers Cave and the Cave of Salnitro, while beyond the rocky ridge open the Latomia Intagliata and that of S. Venera, whose walls are characterized by the presence of numerous votive niches. To the east is the Necropolis Grotticelli, characterized by carraie, tombs and two colombari, one of which is particularly impressive: it has a gable on Doric columns and has been mistakenly identified with the tomb of Archimedes.
