The salt mine is located in Realmonte Realmonte in the province of Agrigento in Scavuzzo district. Together with Racalmuto mine and that of Petralia Soprana (Palermo province) it is one of three Sicilian salt mines still active. A Racalmuto and Petralia, the product is also packed. The mine, as well as the other two, is under concession to Italkali companies, and extends in the subsurface of Raffadali Siculiana and territories.
The mine in activities is known not only for the production of rock salt and kainite, among the best in the world for mineral quality, including the presence of a cathedral in the underground salt carved in salt walls of the mine. 4 December of each year for the Santa Barbara festival is held a public mass in the presence of the authorities.
In 2015 the singer Carlo Muratori has shot a video for the launch of his new album Sale.
